Domestic Spaces and Women's Labor

Historically, the kitchen has often been seen as the domain of women. From farm women canning and preserving the harvest to African American domestics working as cooks in the Jim Crow era, the preparation of food has long been an activity carried out by women. Our four museum sites each offer insights into the role that women played in keeping their families and communities fed.
