National Register of Historic Places
Who We Are & What We Do
The National Register of Historic Places is an official list of sites and properties throughout the country that reflect the prehistoric occupation and historical development of our nation, states, and local communities. It includes districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects that have been identified and documented as being significant in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering or culture.
In Florida, there are more than 1,700 properties and districts listed on the National Register. Nominations for properties in Florida are submitted to the National Park Service through the Florida Department of State’s Division of Historical Resources, following review and recommendation by the Florida National Register Review Board. For more information on the listing process, please visit the Nomination Procedures page.
Listing in the National Register does not, in itself, impose any obligation on the property owner, or restrict the owner's basic right to use and dispose of the property as he or she sees fit. It does, however, encourage the preservation of significant historic resources. Please see the Results of Listing page for more information.
National Register reviewers at the Division of Historical Resources are available for consultation on preparation of proposals. Properties must meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the National Register Criteria for Evaluation, which includes age, integrity and significance.
To determine if a historic resource is eligible for National Register listing, applicants may submit a Preliminary Site Information Questionnaire (.pdf) by mail or via email to the appropriate reviewer, listed below.
