Samuel Wallace
Florida Folklife asked our artists a series of questions to learn more about their traditions and how those traditions have impacted their lives and the lives of those around them. Take a look at the answers we got from Samuel Wallace below.
What folk tradition(s) or traditional art(s) do you practice?
The folk traditional art that I practice is Bahamian Junkanoo costume building and music.
How did you learn those traditions?
I learned about those traditions from growing up in the Bahamas and being an active spectator by going to parade/festivals every year while I grew up there.
Why is it important to maintain folk traditions?
The importance of maintaining folk traditions to me involves sharing the culture and experiences of some of the best parts of living in the Bahamas with people that don’t know or may not have a chance to go there. Junkanoo is a major part of the culture, and is rich in the history of the Bahamas.
How did you first get involved with the Florida Folklife Program?
I first got involved with the Florida Folklife Program through a band member who told me about the program and once we applied/approved for the Florida Folklife apprenticeship program, I met Amanda Hardeman Griffis.
What Florida Folklife Program projects have you participated in and/or what folklife awards have you received?
I participated in the 2017-2018 Florida Folklife Apprenticeship Program and Florida Folk Festival.
How has the Florida Folklife Program benefited you or what value does the program have?
The Florida Folklife Program helped me learn about other cultural groups that are right here in Orlando. I met and stayed in contact with some interesting people. I was honored to participate, share and meet some amazing people.
How can the Florida Folklife Program better serve you?
Keep the program going and invite more people somehow. The festival was really good with food and cultural traditions from the many different people living in Florida. Maybe invite some big name, current artist that can raise awareness of the program/event.
