Marisella Veiga

Florida Folklife asked our artists a series of questions to learn more about their traditions and how those traditions have impacted their lives and the lives of those around them. Take a look at the answers we got from Marisella Veiga below.Photo of Marisella Veiga (left)

What folk tradition(s) or traditional art(s) do you practice?

I am a writer and storyteller and a Cuban traditional home cook.

How did you learn those traditions?

Cubans have a strong oral storytelling tradition which we practiced daily--"Tell me a story" was at the end of the day, often while my father smoked a cigar after dinner on the front porch or I sat with my stepmother in the Florida room after dinner. Cooking traditions were taught by my maternal grandmother and her sister, my great aunt.

Why is it important to maintain folk traditions?

[Folk Traditions] represent a tie to the past. It's a way to bring the past into the present and assure its life in the future. A continuity of experience with a particular group of people helps people connect with their geography, languages, spirituality and tribe. Folk arts help people outside of the tradition appreciate the unknown culture and its expression. It helps promote understanding among people. It softens fear.

How did you first get involved with the Florida Folklife Program?

Years ago, I was invited to teach a Cuban cooking class in Tarpon Springs by Tina Bucuvalas. It was sold out! I taught three other classes in Tarpon, then others expressed an interest.

What Florida Folklife Program projects have you participated in and/or what folklife awards have you received?

I've taught cooking at two Folk Festivals and also told a story at one festival. This year I will be back as a storyteller.

How has the Florida Folklife Program benefited you or what value does the program have?

Benefits are many: they include my pleasure at sharing with others, others who have a real interest in learning. I love meeting others who see the value of and are interested in preserving and learning more about traditional arts of any kind. The festival has broadened my audience as it has provided a platform for me to show and tell to people from all around the state. I always feel happy and proud to have been a participant.
