Marie Theodore-Pharel
Florida Folklife asked our artists a series of questions to learn more about their traditions and how those traditions have impacted their lives and the lives of those around them. Take a look at the answers we got from Marie Theodore-Pharel below.
What folk tradition(s) or traditional art(s) do you practice?
Storytelling
How did you learn those traditions?
I had an apprenticeship through the Florida Folklife Program and under the auspices of Master Storyteller, Liliane Louis
Why is it important to maintain folk traditions?
There is an equalizing factor in folk traditions. It is accessible to everyone and I think in a society divided by class and color, the folk way is an equalizing force.
