George Robinson

Florida Folklife asked our artists a series of questions to learn more about their traditions and how those traditions have impacted their lives and the lives of those around them. Take a look at the answers we got from George Robinson below.

What folk tradition(s) or traditional art(s) do you practice?

Building classic balsa wood surf boards.

How did you learn those traditions?

From natural God given talent and some input/mentoring from Johnny Rice and Dick Catri.

Why is it important to maintain folk traditions?

To keep the hand craft of beautiful art forms passed down generations to come.

How did you first get involved with the Florida Folklife Program?

Tina Bucuvalas contacted me 20 years ago and had a special on surfing and windsurfing. I was also featured in the book, “Just Above the Water: Florida Folk Art.”

What Florida Folklife Program projects have you participated in and/or what folklife awards have you received?

I have participated in the Florida Apprenticeship Program four times, and was recently featured in the “Surfs Up” exhibit at the Museum of Florida History.

How has the Florida Folklife Program benefited you or what value does the program have?

It has made me excited and aware of keeping my art and trade alive and passed down.

How can the Florida Folklife Program better serve you?

You all have been excellent – top notch!
