The Division is responsible for preserving and promoting Florida’s historical, archaeological and folk culture resources.
Starting in 2016, archaeological investigations located a 7,000-year-old Native American ancestral burial site in the Gulf of Mexico offshore near Venice. The Manasota Key Offshore (MKO) archaeological site is unprecedented. It is located on the continental shelf in offshore waters, yet possesses well preserved evidence of an archaeological site in what appears to have been a peat-bottomed freshwater pond thousands of years ago.
