Painting of the Everglades Club in Palm Beach Donated to State History Museum
TALLAHASSEE –
The Museum of Florida History today announced that a 1920s painting of the Everglades Club in Palm Beach has joined the collection. The Museums of Florida History Foundation donated the artwork.
“Since 2000, we have worked with the Museums of Florida History Foundation to enhance the Museum’s permanent collection and exhibits,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “By continuing to acquire these paintings that show the development of Florida’s cities, we are able to preserve and share these pieces of Florida history for future generations.”
Secretary of State Ken Detzner and Museums of Florida History Foundation Board Members (L to R) Jeanette Wilk Yaeger, Pep Culpepper, and Board President Dave Mica stand with the newly-donated painting of the Everglades Club in Palm Beach.
The Everglades Club in Palm Beach
Artist: Charles John Clarke
Oil painting on canvas board, ca. 1920s
Collection of the Museum of Florida History
Donated by the Museums of Florida History Foundation
The oil painting, by artist Charles John Clarke, portrays the exclusive Everglades Club, which was founded in 1919 in Palm Beach. The architecture of the main building is in the Spanish Mediterranean Revival style and was designed by architect Addison Mizner, who popularized this style in south Florida.
Charles John Clarke (1893–1984), the son of a noted painter, began his art training at the Julian Academy in Paris and then studied at the Art Students League of New York. He specialized in coastal landscape and marine paintings. In 1922, as a member of the Palm Beach County Art Club, he exhibited his work at a show at the local women’s club.
This acquisition continues the Museum of Florida History and the Museums of Florida History Foundation’s effort to build a collection of pre-World War II paintings that artistically portray the historical development of Florida cities.
