Museum of Florida History to Host Grand Opening Celebration of Living the Dream—Twentieth-Century Florida Exhibit

~Family-friendly event this Saturday, October 28 is free and open to the public~

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –

On Saturday, October 28 from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the   A. Gray Building in downtown Tallahassee, the Museum of Florida History is hosting a grand opening celebration of their new exhibit Living the Dream—Twentieth-Century Florida. The family-friendly event is open to the public and admission is free. Visitors to Living the Dream will be able to explore our state’s modern history through hundreds of artifacts, films, music and immersive experiences.

“Living the Dream—Twentieth Century Florida rivals an experience at our nation’s top museums and offers an incredible look at Florida’s modern history,” said Secretary of State Ken Detzner. “I encourage all of Tallahassee to join us this Saturday for the Museum’s grand opening event, culminating their year-long 40th anniversary celebration.”

During the grand opening celebration this Saturday, October 28, free activities for kids will be available from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will include a costume contest with prizes and a variety of fun games like life-size checkers, shuffleboard, hula hoops, a fish pond, bean bag toss, photo booth, mini-golf and more. Adults can enjoy live music by The Brown Goose, a beer garden, a decades-themed costume contest and more from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Food and drinks will be available for purchase on-site from local vendors.

The Museum of Florida History is one of Florida’s most prominent cultural treasures and the only statewide institution encompassing a comprehensive overview of Florida history. This year marks the Museum’s milestone 40th anniversary.

In the twentieth century, Florida became the intersection of dreams and reality. The exhibit looks at this transformative century through the lenses of environment, economy, tourism, international conflict, civil rights, migrations and popular culture. The exhibit brings Florida’s modern history to life through the hundreds of artifacts and immersive experiences like walking through a recreated early 1960s fallout shelter or playing music from a juke box with more than 45 song selections from postwar Florida musicians.

 “Museum staff planned, created and built this exhibit from the ground up, and by examining our recent past it is designed to prompt thought and discussions about Florida’s future,” said Lisa Barton, Director of the Museum of Florida History. “We are so proud to welcome the Tallahassee community and all Floridians to the Museum to experience Living the Dream—Twentieth Century Florida for themselves.”

 Living the Dream will officially open to the public on Saturday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the grand opening celebration and will be on display until July 29, 2018. Beginning in November, the Museum is also offering a free monthly Speakers Series in conjunction with the exhibit.
