The Division manages the State Library and Archives, supports public libraries, directs records management services, and is the designated information resource provider for the state of Florida.

In 1931, the Florida State Board of Health began a licensing program that trained and certified midwives.
The purpose of this program was to reduce infant mortality and to promote maternal and child health.

Many of these resources and programs are funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Florida's LSTA program is administered by the Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services.
