Workforce Development

Virtual interviewing at the library

Workforce development in communities is an ever-present need at libraries.  Patrons use computers to search for jobs and submit applications, and receive assistance from library staff.

The LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System (LCPLS) is one of the many libraries in Florida that provides services to help those looking for new job skills, resume building, help with cover letters, searching for jobs and more.

After LCPLS reopened to the public in June 2020, library staff discovered they could provide a new service to job seekers. According to Debra Sears, LCPLS Director, people needed a quiet, private space for virtual interviews.

To meet this need, library staff recommended repurposing tutor rooms at the Main Library, as each was already equipped with a laptop.

Staff assign a room to individual patrons for several hours at a time, on an as-needed basis, so they can work and be interviewed uninterrupted.

The laptops, tabletops, chairs, door handles, light switches and other touch-spots are cleaned and sanitized by staff between users.

Community feedback

Community members have reaped positive impacts from this thoughtful reuse of space. For instance, library staff assisted a patron with locating job announcements in their area of interest. When an interview resulted from one of the contacts the patron made, library staff set up a study room for the interview and, ultimately, the patron got the job!

During FY2021-22, the percentage of total costs for the Community Engagement and Resources Program financed with federal money is 66%; the federal dollar amount to be spent on the program is $73,494. This program does not receive any non-governmental funding.
